A Tribute To LAT (Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid), The Malaysian Cartoonist

Wednesday, September 6th, 2006

Hehe … Since my secondary school days in the 1980s, I have been enjoying the cartoons drawn by Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid (popularly known as LAT). I can even say that LAT’s cartoons in the New Straits Times is in a way, a part of my growing up and journey into adulthood. Hehe :)

The reason why I like LAT’s cartoons so much is because they are very “realistic”. LAT has a very keen observation and talent for drawing cartoons that realistically portray the good, the bad and the uglies in our everyday life and society.

Btw, hehe, here’s my collection (as of September 2006) of books on LAT’s cartoon :

Everytime I see Lat’s cartoon, it will either make me laugh at the foolishness of human beings, smile at the ironies of life, ponder over frustrations in society or just bring back memories of my childhood. But one way or another … cartoons by LAT always give me that “so nice” feeling :)

Oh yes, recently, our country just celebrated our 49th Merdeka Day (National Day). Everyone was encouraged to put up our “Jalur Gemilang” (national flag) as a sign of being patriotic. See what LAT has to say about this:

Ok, let me share with you other LAT cartoons that are my favourites:

Here’s a nice one about the beauty of living in a multi-racial country like Malaysia (”Kongsi-Raya”):

This one about the “painful” realities of life (”Balik Sekolah”):

LAT also reminds us to keep fit:

And these 2, don’t know to laugh or to cry (”Buy Durian” and “Rukun Tetangga”):

Hehe, and of course, the things we some time could not explain but always true, like why the same food that we found everywhere tend to be much “smaller” when it is found in a hotel:

LAT is also exceptionally good in drawing caricatures of famous personalities:

Hehe, but nothing beats LAT’s cartoons of himself. Especially of his childhood in his “kampung” (village, hometown) and his life in general:

Btw, here’s some information about LAT:

Name: Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid
Birthday: 05 March 1951
Homestate: Ipoh, Perak
Family: LAT is married and has 4 children.

LAT started drawing cartoon series “Scenes from Malaysian Life” in the editorial page of the New Straits Times in 1974.

LAT published his first book, “Kampung Boy” in 1979.

Hehe, so, how does LAT actually look like? Is he:

Or

But in my heart, Datuk LAT will always be:

Hehe, so far I have collected 10 books of LAT’s cartoons:

  1. Be Serious Lat
  2. Better Lat Than Never
  3. Dr. Who?
  4. Lat and Gang
  5. Lat and His Lot Again
  6. Lat Gets Lost
  7. Lat was Here
  8. Lat with a Punch
  9. Mat Som
  10. The Portable Lat

And here are the other books on LAT’s cartoons that I am planning to add to my collection:

  1. Budak Kampung
  2. Entahlah Mak …
  3. It’s A Lat Lat Lat Lat World
  4. Kampung Boy: Yesterday and Today
  5. Keluarga Si Mamat
  6. Last as Usual
  7. Lat at Large
  8. Lat’s Lot
  9. Lots More Lat
  10. The Kampung Boy
  11. Town Boy
  12. With a Little Bit of Lat

Hehe, actually my favourites happened to be “The Kampung Boy” and “Town Boy”.

Many years ago I brought with me my copy of “The Kampung Boy” to Taiwan and one of my Taiwanese buddy liked it so much I had to give it to her. And ever since, I have not managed to get a new copy despite looking for it all over Malaysia. Hehe :)

I also liked the “Town Boy” very much, but unfortunately the only copy I could find is the “browsing copy” at the MPH outlet at MidValley. It has been read so many times from cover to cover, “dog-eared” is an under-statement. Nevertheless, I almost bought it a few days ago when I went to that particular MPH bookstore at MidValley again, and my buddies basically had to drag me out of the store to stop me from buying “such a worn-out book”. Hehe, they have no idea how much that book meant to me. I am gonna buy it the next time I am back there … if it is still around. I swear :)

Hehe :)

regards,
Hanyi

ps. all cartoons featured on this blog posting are copyrighted materials, therefore I have intentionally “blurred” them a bit. no tribute to LAT will be complete without some of his cartoons. but I have no intention to infringe on the copyrights. please buy the original books of LAT’s cartoons if you want to have endless hours of laughter and joy. :)

ps. btw, a couple days ago while flying to Kuala Lumpur, I actually saw this AirAsia plane with LAT cartoons!!!

ps. somehow, every bookstore that i have been to in Kuching, Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru (including Popular Bookstores, MPH Bookstores, Times, etc.) only carry a few of the titles of the books on LAT’s cartoons.

ps. Hehe, I have a dream. I hope that one day, I could have one of my LAT’s cartoon books autographed by Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid (LAT) himself. I look forward to that day. Hehe :)

Oyster Mushroom Crispies

Monday, March 27th, 2006

Hehe … Yesterday, I came across a new kind of snack I have never seen (or noticed) before: Frulifresh Oyster Mushroom Crisps.

Frulifresh Crispy Oyster Mushroom Abalone Mushroom Crispies

As I am the “adventurous” type, I actually bought it to try out. So, what is it?

It is actually fresh “Hao2 Gu” (oyster mushroom) or also known as “Bao4 Yu2 Gu” (abalone mushroom): dried, seasoned and oven-baked, ready to eat. Very convenient. Just open the packet and straight away can eat. Hehe :)

Frulifresh Crispy Oyster Mushroom Abalone Mushroom Crispies

Ok, let’s see what the Malaysian manufacturer, C&C Tropical Mushroom Snacks Sdn Bhd (located in Muar, Johor), says about the “Frulifresh Oyster Mushroom Crisps” (as described on its packaging):

Sounds good isn’t it? Well, have to try it yourself first hehe :)

And here’s a closer look of the “wasabi-flavoured” “Frulifresh Oyster Mushroom Crisps”:

Ok, basically, if you like any snack or titbit that is not too salty or spicy, this one is for you. I found it a bit too bland though. I would have liked it better if it is more spicy and stronger taste. Hehe :)

Anyway, for most people I think they will find it “justnice“. hehe :)

Come, have a closer look:

Btw, I actually bought 2 packets of “Frulifresh Oyster Mushroom Crisps”: 1 wasabi flavoured and 1 black pepper flavoured.

Give it a try. Only RM5.00 per packet :)

ps. Btw, “Frulifresh Oyster Mushroom Crisps” is another made-in-Malaysia product of quality.

More Chocolates: Beryl’s Assorted (Raisins, Almonds & Hazelnuts)

Thursday, March 16th, 2006

Hehe … some time back, I blogged about my favourite “Beryl’s Roasted California Almond” chocolates. (Yes, I love chocolates very much … especially good chocolates). Hehe, recently I tried a different type of chocolates from Beryl’s: Assorted.

Beryl's Assorted Raisins Almonds Hazelnuts Chocolates

The “Beryl’s Assorted Chocolates” comes with 3 different types of chocolates: Raisins coated with milk chocolate; Almonds coated with milk chocolate; and Hazelnuts coated with milk chocolate. It is nice to eat 3 different kinds of chocolates at the same time :)

I have always enjoyed the Roasted California Almonds but I found that the Hazelnuts are also very good. I am also most delighted to find that the Raisins are not bad too as they are very fresh (note: I have always feared the “funny” “outdated” smell of unfresh raisins in some chocolates).

Beryl's Assorted Raisins Almonds Hazelnuts Chocolates

Just like I have mentioned before, I like Beryl’s chocolates because they are not too sweet, not too bitter and the price is “justnice“. :)

Yep, again, I say : It is finger licking good. Smooth and thick. Mmmmph …..

cheers,
hanyi

ps. btw, Beryl’s chocolates are made in Malaysia!!!

ps. hehe, just in case you are wondering, NO, i do not work for any chocolate company. i just enjoy blogging about things i like. :)

My Favourite Chocolate: Beryl’s Roasted California Almond

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

Hehe, I have always loved chocolates, any chocolates, especially good chocolates. Currently, one of my favourite chocolates is Beryl’s California Roasted Almond:

Beryl's Almond Chocolates

Why do I like Beryl’s Almond chocolates so much? Well, first of all not too sweet and not too bitter. Then, it is also not too expensive. It is “just nice mah :)

It is really finger licking good. Smooth and thick. Mmmmph …..

Beryl's Almond Chocolates

Hehe, the above chocolate was not bitten by me lah. It was bitten by my colleague, Susan. If I gigit it, I would sapu the whole thing lah.

Anyway, this is what a real connoisseur of chocolate said about the proper way to eat chocs:

Chocolate is never like sex but closest to indeed..

To enjoy great sex u need passion. .lots of it and a great partner (one that u deeply in love with) .. just like appreciating chocolates, u need to get a good quality chocolate, your favorite and eat it with passion.

I like the unique taste of dark chocolate…..so strong, so rich yet so smooth and velvety … Start with the aroma of chocolate.. smell it.. hold a small piece with 2 fingers.. feel it.. take a gentle deep sniff while biting on it, isn’t crunchy and aroma is mild but yet refreshing and mysterious.. ,Once it’s in your mouth don’t chew but let it melts slowly, feel it with your tongue while gently sucking it, feel the smoothness, uniqueness and richness of its taste and texture and aroma in your mouth, at the back of ur tongue and then in ur throat…it’s just ..so SEXY…. arhh..blissfull and not to mention the increasing of heartbeats.. the releasing of endorphins, the happy mood while eating chocolate.. Chocolate can be so intoxicating…..

Oh yeah, the melted bits on your fingers.. nibble it off instead of licking, u know with ur front teeth, softly nibble it while tasting it with the tips of your tongue. K… sensuous !!..LOL.. now u know why u need to eat with your fingers minus the chocolate wrapper?

Geez!!! Now I know I have been enjoying my favourite chocolates the wrong way!!!

cheers,
hanyi

ps. btw, Beryl’s California Roasted Almond chocolates are made in Malaysia!!!
